My family is addicted to applesauce. When apples go on sale super cheap (89 cents a pound....yes anyone from the lower 48s...that is cheap for Alaska)...we buy out the store...litterally. I went in and they were just unloading the truck. I bought every last apple they had (of the ones on sale). Total this year we canned about 100lbs of apples. This picture only shows about 40 lbs of canned apples. I recommend trying to make your own applesauce. The greatest thing about homemade is there is NO sugar or preservatives. I priced it out and it is cheaper to make it than to buy it. So why buy it when it tastes so much better homemade! Recipe:
Apples (try any baking apples such as Braeburn, Gala, Fuji....buy several kinds to make a better flavored applesauce).
Water (enough to fill 1 inch in the bottom of the pan)
Nutmeg and Cinnamon to taste
Peel, slice and core apples. Place in pan and fill pan with 1 inch of water. Put lid on pan and boil at medium heat. Stir often. When apples are very tender mash with a potato masher. If you prefer smooth applesauce then blend with a hand blender. Season with nutmeg and cinnamon to taste. Can with a hot bath process.
